The Lay Salvatorians in Britain

The Lay Salvatorians, more properly known as the International Community of the Divine Saviour, is an association of lay people who share in the apostolic aims and spirituality of the Salvatorians.

Together with the Society of the Divine Saviour (The Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers) and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Saviour (The Salvatorian Sisters) they comprise the International Salvatorian Family.

In Britain there are four groups based in Central London, North London, Bristol and Runcorn who meet monthly and try to live their lives in an apostolic way according to the spirit of our founder Father Francis Jordan.

At their meetings the members engage in a common reflection on the Sunday Gospel and exchange news about their own activities and the work of the Salvatorians. They learn more about the spiritual life and about the history and spirituality of Father Francis Jordan and his foundations. They also plan together various projects which will further the aims of the Society.

We are hoping to become more involved in providing opportunities for lay people to serve in our overseas missions and especially to find placements for gap year students in Tanzania and the Congo.

At our next Annual General Meeting in September our guest speaker will be Ms Cornelia Baumann who is responsible for coordinating placements in Tanzania for the German Provinces. We hope that her visit will enable us to collaborate with them in promoting lay mission work.

The Lay Salvatorians are established in many countries throughout the world including Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Congo,  Germany, Italy, and the USA. The members usually go through a formation process of several years before making a formal commitment which can be renewed on an annual basis.

In Britain we are not yet at this stage and only established a leadership group in 2007. However, with the appointment of a lay promoter we hope to move forward to a new phase of development.
